the churchie national emerging art exhibition 2009
Brisbane artist wins $10,000 in ‘the churchie’ emerging art award
The overall winner of the churchie national emerging art exhibition 2009, is Jonathan Crowther from Highgate Hill, Brisbane, for his painting, entitled The Marks of Time (2).
Crowther was chosen from the 93 finalists and their 96 pre-selected artworks, to take out the $10,000 prize money donated by Brand and Slater Architects.
The category winners are:

painting – Claire Steele, from Perth, Western Australia for Untitled #1, Acrylic on Canvas.

works on paper – Meg Bailey, from Melbourne, Victoria, for Shattered, Graphite on Paper.

photography – Kate Kirby, from Caboolture, Queensland, for The Rapture # 3, C-Type Print.

sculpture – Brian Sanstrom, from Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, for Alzheimer’s; its just a mind game, Mixed Media Installation

moving images –Kenzie Larsen, from Sydney, New South Wales, for The Word Game Project, Art Video
The winners were announced on May 29 at the opening night of the exhibition of finalists’ artworks, now on display at Churchie (Anglican Church Grammar School) at East Brisbane.
Australian artist and art critic, Jeff Makin, was the 2009 judge of the churchie.
This year the churchie, recognised as one of Australia’s leading emerging art competitions, received a record 850 entries from 350 artists across Australia.
All artworks in the churchie exhibition are for sale and range in price from $350 to $10,000.
