The overall winner of the churchie national emerging art exhibition is Sam Smith, from Sydney, for his new technology installation, entitled Film Still Portal].
Smith was chosen from the 86 artists who were finalists, and their 103 preselected artworks, to take out the $10,000 prize money donated by Brand and Slater Architects.
The category winners are:
- painting – Elizabeth Kunoth Kngwarray, from Mosquito Bore Settlement, Utopia Region N. T., entitled Yam Seeds and Flowers
- works on paper – Todd McMillan, from Sydney, entitled I bought these for you
- sculptural/object based – Angela Rossitto, from Brisbane, entitled Love Sick
- new technologies – Todd McMillan, from Sydney, entitled Go on.
The judges special mention went to – Shoufay Derz, from Sydney, entitled Sleep / Walk.
The winners were announced on Friday night, May 30, at the opening night of the exhibition of finalists’ artworks on display at Morris Hall, Churchie (Anglican Church Grammar School) at Oaklands Parade, East Brisbane. The exhibition finishes at 2pm on Sunday June 1. The judges of the churchie 2008, were Francis Parker and Jose Da Silva, both from the Queensland Art Gallery. Francis is Curator, contemporary Australian art and Jose is Associate Curator, film, video and new media.
This year the churchie, recognised as one of Australia’s leading emerging art competitions, received a record number of entries from nearly 400 artists from all states and territories.
