Press Release February 11 2008

11/02/2008

the churchie national emerging art exhibition (the churchie) was established in 1987. A group of parents of students at the Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane invited the founders, patrons, collectors and art gallery directors to form a committee, known today as The Committee of the churchie national emerging art exhibition. The churchie aims to recognise and award emerging adult artists from across Australia.  Now in its 21st year, the churchie has become an important event in the Australian arts calendar. It is open to emerging artists aged 18 years and older who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. ‘Emerging’ means entrants:

  •  have tertiary training or practical experience in fine arts and/or the art industry
  • are committed to an artistic career
  • have not exhibited regularly through a leading commercial gallery or art dealer
  • have a reputation and career that is in a developing stage.

There are four categories in the churchie:

  • painting
  • works on paper
  • sculptural/object based
  • new technologies.

The prize for the overall winner is $10,000, donated by sponsor, Brand & Slater Architects.  The four category winners each receive $275. The entry fee is A$30 and entrants can submit up to three works in total. These works must have been completed within 12 months of the exhibition opening date, 29 May 2008. Works that are pre-selected for the churchie must be available for display and sale during the exhibition period (29 May – 1 June 2008). Works that are entered in other competitions or awards are not eligible for the churchie.

The closing date for entries in the churchie national emerging art exhibition 2008 is 25 March 2008. Applications can be made online at the churchie’s website: http://www.churchieemergingart.com/
