The churchie national emerging art exhibition offers an inspiring glimpse into the future of the Australian art scene. It provides a forum for artists to compete for a prize across five categories; paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture. Finalists from all Australian states and territories will be pre-selected with the overall winner rewarded with a $15,000 cash prize sponsored by Brand & Slater Architects.

This exhibition has provided a launching pad for many talented artists.

Simon Mee whose 2001 winning work called “Bacchanal” was displayed in the Rockhampton Art Gallery

Stephen Nothling whose work was displayed at Gallery 482 in Brisbane and Eve Breuer Gallery in Sydney.

Terry Summers ws included in a National Sculpture prize at the NGA.

Annie Hogan who was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study overseas.

Madeleine Kelly, winner of the churchie 2004, for her painting ‘Coalface’ was subsequently awarded an Australia Council Residency in Paris.

Walter Stahl, winner of the churchie 2005, went on to win the City of Perth Photomedia Award in 2006.


Cassandra Laing, joint winner of the churchie 2006, for her work on paper entitled ‘A Charmed Life’, went on to be selected as a finalist in several other national art prizes; the Waterhouse National History Art Prize, Warrnambool New Social Commentaries ’06, the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award and Tidal ’06, City of Devonport Art Award and the prestigious Dobell Prize for Drawing.


In 2006 Paul  Mumme was a joint winner with a single channel DVD entitled ‘The Hero’. This was the first time an entrant in the New Technologies category has taken out the award.

This important cultural and community event has been held annually since 1987. A retrospective exhibition ‘20/20’ was held at the Museum of Brisbane in 2007. The retrospective showed current work by 20 artists who had been entrants in the churchie over the past 20 years.
